How do you like your mochi?

Happy holidays, all! I got a big bag of kirimochi. I usually toast mine in the toaster oven, put a slice of cheese on it, wrap it in nori, and dip it in soy sauce. How do you like to serve and eat mochi?

I keep forgetting to eat mochi with cheese and nori this season but that sounds good. I'm eating oshiruko and kinako mochi so far, with plans for ozoni in the new year. I've seen elegant and simple ozoni, but we'll just put mochi into our leftover nabe. Daikon oroshi is not a favorite but another option.

I like sweet mochi the best, I think. Koshian or Tsubuan dango are probably my favorites. I also like the sweet yet savory of mitarashi dango. I've never made them myself though, I always just get the pre-made ones.

@helloalissa Ah! Thanks for reminding me to put mochi instead of rice or noodles in my nabe.

@ReishiiTravels I've enjoyed zenzai. Just mochi, red beans and sugar? Is there a knack to it?

I can't say I have ever tried cheese like you do, and I am intrigued. Mochi is always sweet for me, with kinako and sugar. But I got to try this white-miso-soup mochi recently and it is awesome.

@JapanRamen I don't have much of a sweet tooth. White miso shiru with mochi sounds good....I'll give that a try.

@TonetoEdo I buy the bean paste already made in a can or pack. That way, you only have to add some hot water to it!

@Bella I found recipes for zenzai on justonecookbook.com. It’s where I have learned a lot of washoku recipes lately.

I recently got introduced to 'Pizza-mochi', where you microwave the mochi with cheese and then mix it with tomato sauce and some herbs if you like. Even though I also like mochi with soysauce and nori, this is still my favourite way of eating mochi.

@Kanuba Pizza mochi! I did something like pasta mochi the other night - a toasted rice cake with leftover tomato-coconut sauce. It was pretty good.

As a first-time experience, I found mochi to be delightful! Its chewy texture and sweet filling made for a unique and enjoyable treat.

Summer reading

I know there have been questions in the past about what we're watching, but I'm wondering what you're reading at the moment! I'm looking to get a few new books for summer and I'd love to hear if you have any recent recommendations. If you have any good spots here to get EN language books in person, too, I'd appreciate if you would share those as well!

Condiments in your fridge?

Just for fun! I was thinking the other day how different the contents of my fridge are to the fridge I grew up with! Just one example, I always have soy sauce in my fridge and usually at least one other unopened bottle in the cupboard. There was never soy sauce in my fridge growing up. And the friends I grew up with don't have soy sauce in their fridges even now. But my Uni friends all have soy sauce in their fridges, because they all lived in Japan for at least a year. I was just wondering what things do you have in your fridge here that you probably wouldn't have in your fridge in your home country had you never lived here.

Moving house process

I've been in my apartment for nearly 7 years. I've got my eye on an apartment one station closer to work. But I forgot what it was like to move in here! It was all a bit traumatic... Have you got some packing tips, suggestions for how to move your household goods, and what to save for last?
