Unconventional places where you've learned more about life in Japan
BigFamJapan blogged today about learning more about Japan's interesting anniversaries via her car navigation system, and it got me thinking! Do you have any interesting examples of learning more about life in Japan from an unconventional source? Would love to hear about them if you have!

Maybe a weird answer, but public transport. Compulsive reader here. I read, or attempt to read, all the text on my train and bus rides. I learn all kinds of things - train company operations, events, services, and products. When there are few passengers, I sneak a photo of kanji that I'm curious about. I've learned some word-play by reading the bumph!

Not unconventional in Japan, but unconventional in my homeland - parks! I love the way the parks here have the names of trees and flowers on plaques beside them. In Ireland, they do put up photos on the maps, but its not as convenient or informative as having the names of the flowers / trees right beside the living example of them!

@genkidesu Another niche source I recommend is wakapoetry.net The website has an extensive collection of waka poems (in the orginal, modern Japanese, romaji, and English), a list of associated foliage, and manyo garden locations.
