Economic relief from your municipality.

I received some small breaks on water/sewer bills and waste disposal. In my city, Noda. https://www.city-cost.com/blogs/TonetoEdo/zKPj4-living_noda_shi_chiba Have you gotten relief from your municipality? Do these relief measures make a difference for you?

Nothing that I know of here, yet. Did you have to apply, or was it something they just did automatically? I think it's great when companies understand that right now is tough financially on a lot of households. Kudos to Noda City for looking out for their residents!

Nothing in yet in Gifu either!

@genkidesu No application was required. My neighbor mentioned the suspension of the water and sewer bills a few weeks ago, but the extra garbage bag voucher was a surprise. A tiny surprise.

@TonetoEdo it all helps! Hope it spans to other regions across Japan, too.

@ReishiiTravels Prefectures have budget concerns, but the tax and breaks like this are at city level. The tax and municipal services are so different from city to city.

I live in Tokyo and we pay utilities just as we used to and have to buy garbage bag regularly. It is a nice gesture of your city.

@Eli It sure looks like we are getting extra care from City Hall. My friends in a city in Ibaraki Prefecture merely got extra masks, and that was about it.

Wow! Good to know your municipality does that. In our area, the City Government gave out a one-time finance aid for each child in the household, on top of the quarterly welfare benefit. We are grateful for simple, unexpected blessings such as that.

@MommyRam A few months ago, Noda City provided a one-time benefit to single parents.

Nothing in my municipality, either. But there's special support for business owners. I appreciate that, even if I don't benefit from it directly.

Good for you! Nothing here as far as I know, and kinda doubt there will be anything extra.

Not on utilities no, but we have got quite a lot for the kids. For example, the primary school aged kids each got a book of vouchers for free food at participating restaurants / conbini etc worth 3000 yen (per book). They each got a box of masks. We got a one off additional payment of 10,000 each from the kotate and there was also another deposit in our bank book (other than the 100,000 each) from the town that we can't find a letter about! It was something like 24,000 yen so we were thinking maybe 6000 each for the kids for something. We were getting it from all angles at one stage!

Condiments in your fridge?

Just for fun! I was thinking the other day how different the contents of my fridge are to the fridge I grew up with! Just one example, I always have soy sauce in my fridge and usually at least one other unopened bottle in the cupboard. There was never soy sauce in my fridge growing up. And the friends I grew up with don't have soy sauce in their fridges even now. But my Uni friends all have soy sauce in their fridges, because they all lived in Japan for at least a year. I was just wondering what things do you have in your fridge here that you probably wouldn't have in your fridge in your home country had you never lived here.

Moving house process

I've been in my apartment for nearly 7 years. I've got my eye on an apartment one station closer to work. But I forgot what it was like to move in here! It was all a bit traumatic... Have you got some packing tips, suggestions for how to move your household goods, and what to save for last?

Golden Week 2025 plans?

This year's Golden Week gives us Tuesday, April 29th, and then potentially a four-day weekend from May 3rd to 6th. How are you intending to spend the break? Will you travel, "staycation", or dare I ask, work through it?
