Japanese Traditional Snacks in Niigata?

I've found a few smaller Japanese style finger-food style snacks or sweets, but I'm always in search of new places. Dora-yaki, manju, daifuku, those sorts of snacks/sweets. If you've got recommendations, please share them!

I never thought I would call Japan my home, but after 20 years I understand the beauty and appeal of Land of the Rising Sun. Part of my affection for Japan stems from my bride, Manami who introduced me to the essence of this magical land. As an amateur historian and sociologist, the uniqueness of Japan’s past captured my heart and soul, bonding me to the society and culture that is now a part of me. This society has embraced me, and I am no longer a visitor, I have recast myself as a cultural hybrid, always updating my identity with the rich cultural information from the past into the present, and, invariably, the future.

Not sure if you want Niigata City recommendations or Niigata Prefecture as a whole, but if you're ever in Urasa there's a great little shop behind the station called Tamaya Confectionery. We love their sasadango, but they have a variety of other mochi-based sweets. Their address is 965 Urasa, Minamiuonuma, Niigata 949-7302.

  • @genkidesu I'll take any recommendations! Thank you! I'm not doing much traveling now with corona, but as soon as I can, Tamaya Confectionery is on my list!

@JapanDreamscapes completely understandable, especially with the numbers spiking of late!

Niigata is famous for Sasa Dango. They should be available in most souvenir shops.

  • @Eli So true! My favorite place to buy them was at 'Furusatomura'. That place has an amazing flower garden with blooms for each season (when not covered in snow) and the snack/saké bazaar is to die for! Thanks for the recommendation!

Another place I forgot to mention is Bunsuido Confectionery in Yahiko. They've won awards for their panda yaki, which are these panda-shaped pastries filled with different things like zunda, custard, and chocolate cream.

It is Niigata after all, so my go to is always anything rice based. Can't go wrong with Niigata senbei!

What sakura apps / websites are you using in 2024?

What websites or Apps are you using to keep track of the bloom stages of cherry blossoms in 2024? I usually use a mix of Tenki.jp, Yahoo and Jorudan and another one that I have forgotten! (I delete them at the end of each season to free up space on my phone). I occasionally use the app from JMA, but I don't like its set up. Are there any other Apps or websites you recommend? TIA

What's in your toshikoshi soba?

What do you put in your toshikoshi soba? One year I sauteed some chicken and naganegi to start a broth augmented with tsuyu, cooked the soba separately, and served the broth with kamaboko slices.

Transferring Pension

I'm currently sorting through EVERYTHING I bought back from Japan with me, so you'll get all your new blogs soon. I came across some documents that I actually completed when I came back from Japan, which was to do with pensions. This took me a while to figure out because it was complicated. Would you like to know how to transfer your pension to you from Japan? People say you can't. The things is... you can.

My FIRST Log! Would You Like to Hear it?

In my last post I asked what you would like to hear from me now I have left. I was digging through some stuff the other day and I found my very FIRST book log that I kept when I toured Japan originally. I was thinking about typing it up and reminding myself of what my younger self thought of Japan. Would you like to hear about what I got up to? I'm not sure if I can even remember! HA!!
