岩手县是本州最大的县市， 也是在北海道之后面积最大的县。相对的， 她的人口也是续北海道之后最小的。岩手县的总人口只有约一百三十三万，其中三十三万人都居住在县首都盛冈。 岩手县的旅游业发达，每年都吸引很多的游客来参观平泉的中尊寺，毛越寺和盛冈的盛冈城。不幸的是岩手县近年遭遇了许多天灾，例如地震，海啸与水灾。
