Coastal area temple
Komyo-ji is located close to the Sagami Bay waterfront, and the picturesque grounds are known for sakura in spring and lotus flowers during the summer months. It's also a great spot for international visitors who might want the traditional rock garden atmosphere but don't want to go all the way to Kyoto -- we would often take visitors to the Kamakura area, and this shrine in particular, when we lived in Tokyo for that very reason. Also, there's no admission fee, an added bonus for anyone on a budget.

Kanto's biggest sanmon gate
Kamakura City's Komyoji, a Jodo sect temple is noted for its proximity to the beach (the closest of all the Kamakura temples), the largest sanmon gate in the Kanto region, and a karesansui rock garden. It's also the location of a pet cemetery spearheaded by veterinary carers in the city. The temple has special memorial ceremonies a few times a year to remember the spirits of beloved animals. I recommend calling ahead to the temple to find out when they open the sanmon gate for viewing and host shojin ryori meals. You might want to wait a while as the temple hall is under restoration for a few years. If you're coming off Yuigahama Beach on your way back into the city it's well worth dropping in to see the massive gate and garden.
