    A stacked torii spot

Kamakura is one of my favorite spots to get that fix of culture but without the crowds of Kyoto, and if you want the Kyoto/Fushimi Inari stacked torii vibe then be sure to consider Sasuke Inari Shrine. It's home to almost 50 stacked torii arches, plus plenty of fox statues around the grounds.

A hidden Inari shrine with intriguing history

It's easy to miss this shrine as you walk along the trail from Zeniarai Benzaiten, a popular destination. There's a reason. It's located in one of the kakurezato, or hidden villages, places that are remote and easy to defend from intruders. It's a spooky spot shaded by trees and covered in moss. The story goes that Minamoto no Yoritomo inaugrated the shrine after he became shogun, guided by a dream of an old man from this stronghold. It's covered in images of foxes, the messengers of Inari.
