I would like to inspire these children to try their best as well.I am actually assigned to three schools this year, two are elementary schools and one is a junior high school.So far, all the schools have been welcoming and I can really feel all the teachers wanting me to be part of the family - they’ve been really friendly and accommodating. I can really feel their support for the goals and tasks of me as an Assistant Language Teacher.The students have been really friendly and sometimes ecstatic as well, every time I see them at school and especially when we are in their classrooms.Talking about the ALT’s daily tasks at school, I would say, it varies to the English teachers or the Japanese teachers of English (JTE) you’re paired with. Some teachers just want you to follow their lead and support them with the lessons as discussed. Basically, you’re there to be part of the English activities and games, also you are tasked in teaching the students the proper way to pronounce and enunciate English words and phrases.The JTE could also have some clarifications about the English grammar and just random questions from creating simple sentence patterns to explaining the meaning of some English words and terminologies. So, you had better prepare and be attentive at all times so you can maintain your connection to your JTE and to the students during the entire session.Basically you and the JTE should have a constant communication before, during, and at the end of the class. You should be a team, and make sure the students see it as well.I usually arrive at school 30 minutes before 8:00 am. That way I have plenty of time to prepare for the upcoming lessons. I always talk to the English teachers or to the JTE before we start the class for me to know what the JTE’s plan for the day is. I have to make sure we are on the same page before we head to the classroom and start the class.I am still learning a lot of things about this job each day, and I can’t wait to share more about my other experiences as an ALT in Japan in the future. All I can say is that a job that inspires people is a fulfilling job such that you feel like you’re not actually working anymore. In other words, It was a really difficult decision for me to leave the company and accept a new challenge. This decision was so hard that I had to ask for my family and friend’s honest opinion about saying yes to this new chapter. Of course you probably have your own list of reasons why visiting parks in Japan is a must-do during the holidays.Mizumoto Park in Katsushika, TokyoThe recent Golden Week holiday was my first time to come Mizumoto Park in Tokyo's Katsushika City and I was just amazed by how massive it is. I came here with my sister and brother-in-law on a not-so-busy day I guess. It was on the last day of the Golden Week holiday period that we decided to come to this park and spend my entire afternoon surrounded nature.We arrived at around 01:00 pm and it was a good decision to stop by the nearest convenience store to grab something to eat and drink before heading to the park.I had three slices of bread and a cup of coffee which I bought for my lunch/afternoon snack. I don’t eat that much until dinner so this was enough for my afternoon stroll at the park.At around 2:00 pm we got hungry and decided to find a spot where we could eat our snack. After passing by the lake I saw these picnic tables under the majestic sequoia trees and asked them if we could stay there! The place was perfect for picnic!We stayed there for about an hour before they made a decision to take the park's forest trail. I was really hesitant because I thought there would be a lot of bugs or small creatures in the trail, and to add to that I really don’t like the creepy sounds you hear from the tree branches brushing against each other or the sound of some creatures behind the bushes. It could be bugs or any weird-looking amphibians or maybe even reptiles!Anyway we took the forest trail and nothing out of the ordinary showed up. So I guess it was just all in my mind.It was 5:00 pm when we decided to pack up and head home. We took a different way out so we could explore the area a little more and surprisingly, it took us about 30 minutes to exit the park. There’s just so much more to see and we couldn't help but take our time walking and appreciating the park’s beauty.I will definitely be back and try new things around Mizumoto Park next time. I think, going there at an earlier time would be perfect. Mizumoto Park could be a perfect place to recharge from a busy week of work. Getting your daily exercise by getting round on foot on your way to work or home. Walking a few kilometers on a daily basis is normal here in Japan. It’s like a huge part of every people’s life already. Unless you are used to driving your own vehicle when going places, walking long distances is, I believe, a necessity for some people, as well as for people like me who want to save money and want to be healthy at the same time.As they always say, “you are what you eat”. The food you eat and the activities you do everyday will dictate what your health condition is. Also, don’t forget to get enough sleep, rest if you must, take a break from work if you think you’re close to the edge of burning out. Stay away from stress as much as you can. Talk to the people close to your heart when you feel lonely, ask for advice, guidance, or simply have a nice chit chat with them.Although Japan’s talented doctors, state-of-the-art facilities, and effective medicines have got your back, it is still best to avoid getting sick. It could be extremely challenging for people like me who are not used to this kind of transportation back home.There are just so many things to remember and for a non-train commuter you will definitely be bombarded with so much information about the dos and don'ts when riding the trains, how to change lines to get to your destination, what’s the best route to take to save time, what's the cheapest train schedule. The list goes on. Back at home, I would only open my Google Map when I needed to drive to a place I was not familiar with. Here in Japan I think it is an absolute necessity, especially for new comers like me. I arrived in Japan three weeks ago and all I can say is that I’m still in the adjustment phase in terms of commuting here in Japan. Well, getting the hang of it could take time but I think you really have to learn fast. When I got here, my sister guided me on how to take the train in order to go to places I want to be. She showed me how to check the train schedules, how to adjust my time of arrival at my destination so I won’t be late to work, and how soon or at what time should I leave the house to get to the station on time. I mean, I had no clue that Google's direction function works like this, because again I seldom use this application in my home country. It is really a powerful tool for this generation, like it can be your daily guide when you travel all by yourself to places or areas you’ve never been to before. Actually, it’s not just Google directions. You can download other navigation apps that are really handy when you travel around Japan. I heard Navitime is a good app to download, but for now I have to stick to Google Maps and directions. Pretty much I will definitely download other navigation apps in the future and maybe I will discover something new with them.All I can say for now is that I’m still a work in progress when it comes to getting familiar with transportation in Japan. We just have to take it slowly, just like a baby still trying to learn how to walk independently. This country is definitely one worth visiting no matter what time of the year. Be it winter, spring, summer or fall, there is so much to see and experience.This is actually not my first time to visit Japan, however, the last time I was here was probably not the best time to visit Japan. Year 2020 was the onset of the Global Pandemic (Covid), I would say, it was one of the most challenging times in human history. An event that struck us all and paralyzed the entire world.Me together with my family first came to this country a week before the lockdown. It was a fun week for us!We stroll in the streets of Tokyo and visited a few well-known tourist attractions of the City which was still open that time. Luckily some of the parks in the city were still open for visitors, but for most attractions, they decided to halt operations early in preparation for the worldwide lockdown.In short, our trip to Japan was cut short and we had to flew back home before the lockdown. Fast forward to year 2024, I am back in Japan! This time as a foreign worker. This is absolutely a new experience for me since I will be living in this promising country for at least a year. All I can say is I’m thrilled and excited with what Japan has in store for me this year. Pretty much I will be visiting places I missed out the first time I was here. There’s just so much to explore and experience, and I can’t wait to start my little adventure in this country dubbed as the “Land of the Rising Sun”.
