NY style pizza in the stylish Shibuya
For better or worse, every time I go to Slice, I have a different experience. The first time: amazing. The second time: awful. The most recent: middle of the road. When Pizza Slice first opened its doors, it was a rarity in Japan. Its pizza was about as NY-authentic as you could get. I mean, the owner imported a pizza oven from the USA specifically so he could make it as authentic as possible. It seems that now the cracks are starting to show, and what was once an amazing place to get a slice of pizza has become just another pizza place in Japan, which is truly a shame. Their menu is still extensive and you can get toppings still not widely available in Japan. However, the most recent times I've been, my pizza has either been burnt or not at all fresh. (They have all the slice on display and will rewarm your chosen slice in the oven.) It's a shame that the sizes of the slices have also decreased, even though the price stayed the same. It's difficult to say if the pizza is good or not. On some days, it's amazing. On others, you'd be better off at Pizza Hut. It all depends on the staff working at the time. However, for the price I'm paying per slice, I'd like some consistency. The interior is very modern and just cheeky enough without being too try-hard. Pop culture references cover the walls. Your beer is served in a brown paper bag, true NYC style. The walls are white subway tile. The window even has a fake "A" from the NY health inspectors proudly displayed. You can also make reservations if you're going to have a party or large group of people. I planned a birthday here once and they cut out "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" in pepperoni and put it on top. The atmosphere is great, and when the food is too, it's a happening place to be. But otherwise, it's a sad reminder of all it could've been.
