The best grilled eel
Narita City is noted for its freshwater eel shops, and Kawatoyo is probably the most representative of the local cuisine. The main shop on Narita Omotesando, established in 1910, is atmospheric for its warm wood interior and zashiki, tatami flooring and low seating. The eels are very fresh, and the chefs can be seen working at a long table filleting the fish. The eels are poached, grilled, and served with their signature sauce. The preferred condiment is sansho pepper. The eel is tender, flavorful and comes with a side of pickles. Add kimosui, a light broth with eel liver. Kawatoyo is a splurge, of course. On the other hand, Narita Shinshoji Temple and the park behind it are free admission so it all balances out.
