Edo-Tokyo Museum
One of my favorite museum in Tokyo is the Edo-Tokyo Museum in the heart of the Sumo area Ryogoku. It is the perfect place for tourists to learn and especially to see the history of Japan. There is so much to see in the museum. For example, the replica of the famous Nihonbashi bridge from the Edo period and many old Japanese houses. There are also many small miniature exhibits of old villages, castles and even summer festivals. It is even possible to enjoy a small role playing game. The museum has also some exhibition pieces from the 50s up to modern times. Especially that you can also have a look in a apartment from that time is very cool. It really feels like traveling back in time. Mostly all displays are in Japanese and English but you can also get an audio guide in the following languages: Chinese, French, Spanish, German, Russian, Italian and Thai. The entrance fee is 600 yen (sometimes you have to pay extra for special exhibition). In as well as all areas photos are allowed and for the most part more than desired.
