    Miyazaki Hayao's inspiration

Around the corner from the Ghibli Museum is the Edo Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum. The buildings were moved from all over the Tokyo area in a bid to preserve the variety of architectural heritage before progress and wrecking got to them. For me, it was nostalgic to step into a Craftsman-style house much like the ones I'm familiar with from my native Vancouver, Canada. There are very few buildings of that era remaining in the Kanto region. I mentioned Ghibli Museum. The famed animation artist Miyazaki Hayao frequented the architecture museum and drew inspiration from the preserved street leading to the bath house. Here you will see echoes of Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro Kami Kakushi) and glimpses of forest that remind you of scenes from Totoro.

    Unique insight into Tokyo's architecture

Situated in the outskirts of Tokyo, the Edo Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum gives you a great look into a host of different buildings and various design styles. One of my favorite things here are the buildings with thatched roofing, similar to what you’d see at places like Shirakawago. The museum is located in Koganei Park, which is a pleasant spot to wander around and soak up some nature before or after your museum visit. They’re closed most Mondays so bear that in mind if you’re making a special trip. Their website (http://www.tatemonoen.jp/english/raien/holiday.php) lists holidays and closures. Adult admission to the museum is 400 yen.
