Cafe & Bar: Hideaway
In the area between shopping central Omotesando and Harajuku lies a relaxing retreat for fans of treehouses. Who would have known? I had no idea it was there, so I’m glad my friend introduced me to it. This was her first time going as well. You can order (what I had) an affordable lunch set (only 1000 yen with salad and a drink), but also the afternoon tea time set (tea and cake for 750 yen). Next time I’ll try the pumpkin pudding tea set - yes please! There are also unique menu items and drinks like "Hemp Nuts Coffee" (600 yen). But stay for the atmosphere. I had the curry lunch set (with brown rice, awesome) and grapefruit juice when I went. I stayed a bit after my friend left to relax as I wasn’t in a hurry, and I even took a nap there. It was a really quiet and relaxed place, plus there were tons of interesting things to look at. Lots of handmade items were used and there were books about treehouses and surfing. This place felt like home to me – it could have been in Portland, Oregon. I think the tree growing through the table where we sat is a Douglas Fir – at least it looks like one. They’re common trees in Portland. Plus the relaxed attitude inside was so opposite of what you experience walking around busy (and somewhat snooty) Omotesando. All the driftwood and unique décor was similar to an art shop I that used to visit often in Portland, (now closed) Grass Hut Art Market. I recommend a visit when you’re in the area!
