Modern shrine in Old Tokyo
The architecture of Akagi Shrine in Kagurazaka is possibly one of the biggest draws of this modern shrine in urban Tokyo. It was designed by one of Japan's prominent architects, Kengo Kuma. When they were rebuilding Akagi Shrine a few years ago they made a daring choice to go with modern architecture so very different to most shrines. The stark contrast of glass and concrete is impressive. Thanks to the floor to ceiling windows you can see the inside of the praying / blessing clearly. The shrine grounds are tranquil, but I personally find earthen shrines and temples more spiritual. Akagi shrine is lacking in this regard in my opinion. Beautiful torii. Good location. Free to admire. Cafe / Restaurant on the grounds. Surrounding neighbourhood very charming with lots of quaint coffee shops and confectioners.
