Moomin Valley free theme park
For the longest time this was one of Saitama's best kept secrets. A free Moomin Valley theme park in rural Saitama, within comfortable commutable distance of Tokyo. However, with the development of the first Moomin theme park outside of Finland, it has been firmly placed on the map and wish lists for outdoor and theme park lovers in Japan. Thankfully, this part, the long standing park, is rumoured to remain free and open to the public. The park is popular with families and with hikers as there is a hiking route out of the park into the mountains. Within the park there are 3 buildings you can enter. As you come into the park there is the facility management building on the right. This has a large hall where the sometimes hold events. The most popular building is the quirky building pictured. Once you leave your shoes at the door you’re free to roam the house and discover the nooks and crannies. There are 3 floors and a basement to explore. The upper floors have little beds and items laid out to make it look like someone lives there. There are doors, windows, cubby holes, secret spaces, stair cases and lots more to captivate the littlest of minds. There is also a educational facility in a wooden building. The first floor has some educational exhibitions and upstairs there is a reading room with children's books. There is also a small shop beside the car park. It opens 9 am to 5 pm Tuesdays to Sundays, closed on Mondays. The park is quite hard to find. It is approximately 20 minutes from both the Sayama-Hidaka and Iruma Interchanges of the Chuo expressway. The park is situated behind Hanno’s city public gym and hockey courts. There is a Cainz beside it which is probably the best landmark. By train; it is a 20 minute walk from Motokaji 元加治 Station on the Seibu Ikebukuro line.
