Left a lasting impression
In my early days in Japan, I wasn't that interested in shrines and temples when I first visited Ueno Toshogu shrine. But it was special enough to leave a lasting impression. So much so, that whenever I have guests from home or abroad I tend to bring them to the Ueno area, where there is a wealth of suitable sightseeing locations, and always stop of at Ueno Toshogu. I love seeing other people's reactions to the gold laden shrine too. For me, it definitely was one of the shrines that played a key role in awakening an appreciation and love of Japanese shrines.

Ueno Toshogu Shrine
For sure many foreign visitors know the popular Nikko Tōshōgū shrine with its beautful decoration. If you don´t have the time or the chance to visit Nikko, I can recommend to visit the smaller Ueno Toshogu shrine. The shrine can be find just right next to the Ueno Zoo. Look out for a street with many white flags, which will lead you the way. There are also many huge lanterns on the whole shrine area, which are very impressing and typical for the Toshogu shrines. The main structure of this shrine was rebuilt in 1651 and can be visit for a small fee of 500 Yen, but it is possible to go till the main gate (Karamon) for free. The Main gate is already very beautiful and shines amazing gold on a sunny day. Like the Nikko Toshogu shrine you can also see at the Ueno Toshogu shrine a lot of beautiful and colorful deconration. The shrine is really a perfect alternative for all who can not go to Nikko.
