More like a freak show than a zoo
It was very surreal and upsetting visiting the zoo at top of Mt Hodo. Firstly there are two things I should say: there is a slight possibility that this zoo is a wildlife conservation. Unfortunately, I can't find any information online to support that. But giving the zoo the benefit of the doubt that is why I have given it two stars rather than one. Secondly, they have signs up to say they are renovating parts of the zoo. I can only hope and pray that is true. Don't read on if you don't like to hear about animals who are suffering or distressed. Our radars went up when we saw rows of rabbits in cages. But many of the rabbits are in an open space. There were also rabbits with eye infections. The Japanese monkeys constantly fought and we saw many with scars and/or fresh wounds on their skin. But most upsetting of all was the three legged deer who implored us with his doe eyes. We cried. S/he can't do anything, but sit or stand. I don't recommend bringing children here if they are sensitive, but if you or them are hardy I think that poor deer needs all the visitors s/he can get. The young staff we talked to are really lovely, so please God they can work to make this zoo a better place for the animals.
