    Old fashioned Variety and Flavor

On every trip to quaint Shibamata shopping street, I pick up pickles at Marujin, a shop that sells old-fashioned Japanese preserves. Marujin pickles vegetables, fish, and mushrooms of all kinds. If you’re new to this kind of food, you can sample many of the varieties at the counter out front. A favorite in our house is pickled eringi mushrooms with a little togarashi hot pepper. It’s a treat in a bento box, or served as a side with dinner. The shop keepers are friendly and will tell you the names of things and their ingredients if you’re not fully literate in Japanese.
