Convenient location
Ueno Zoo is one of those places you end up visiting when you stay in Tokyo for a long time. You just have to, when you know its the oldest zoo in Japan! Despite its age, its very well maintained. It is also very well laid out. Its conveniently located so its easy to plan a visit there. However, having since visited several other zoos in Japan, I can say its far from the best zoo in Japan. But without focusing on the negative, there are more than 2600 animals of 400+ species in Ueno zoo, so there really is something for everyone. And they have pandas!!

It's been a while since I visited, but a few points to note...
Ueno Park was one of the first places I visited when we initially moved to Tokyo, and I visited the zoo during that day. I will say that the day I went was in July and it hit 38c with humidity that day...on reflection it wasn't the best day for a zoo visit. I didn't have children at the time but the zoo area is quite hilly in parts, so if you're visiting with little ones I would highly recommend a stroller so they don't get exhausted. I'd also highly advise against a summer visit. Price-wise, the zoo is very reasonable for the admission cost (600 yen for adults at the time of writing this review). This is far, far less than what I'd expect to pay for zoo admission back home in Australia.

Ueno Zoo
They have a great variety of animals, some souvenir shops and food stalls. The park itself is quite big and there is a train inside the park which you need to pay for. However, the bigger animals are often kept alone. Sometimes I feel like I'm looking at sad faces when I watch them. They launch commemorative stamps every time a new animal becomes part of the zoo.
