Spiral Building, art intersecting public life
Spiral is a glass, marble and chrome building in the Minami-Aoyama district of Tokyo. The shapes of the building are like a giant geometry lesson, with triangles, squares and rectangles intersecting. Inside, the building is a fluid space combining art galleries, cafes, boutique shops, and a large performance hall. Spiral is to my mind one of the most accessible gallery spaces in Tokyo. The front lobby is inviting, and the cafe spaces are intimate despite being part of an open space. Spiral Market has an always changing display of tableware, stationery and accessories. On a rainy day, it's a great place for lunch, or just a cup of coffee, in a varied and stimulating atmophere.
