Quick, Hot (or cold), Healthy Noodles for a Low Price

Fuji Soba is a chain of soba and udon noodle shops that can be found throughout Tokyo and the surrounding metro area. Often somewhat near train stations, these shops sell cheap, healthy food for a very low price. A basic soba or udon order, either sered hot in soup, or cold with dipping sauce, is only ¥300. A basic hot tempura udon or tempura soba is ¥410 yen. They have sets that include mini katsudons (pork and egg over rice), or curry rice with the noodles available as well. The most expensive set on the menu is only ¥720 yen. To order, there is a ticket machine either outside the shop or just inside the door. In my experience, it is only in Japanese, however, there is almost always a big window display of many of the dishes available, so if you can match the hiragana and/or kanji for the one you would like, you should be able to buy the ticket without a problem. You take the ticket to the counter. Be sure to let them know if you would like soba or udon, and then wait for them to call your number (on the order slip). These shops are perfect for when you want a quick, healthy meal. I often will stop in at one on my way home after I've had a long day and am getting home late. I get my usual, hot tempura udon, and often ask them to add a piece of tempura chicken. Extra pieces of tempura (the type, I have found, varies by shop), can be purchased with coins at the window where you give them your ticket. The good food and the enka playing in the background make for a fitting way to end my day. The location of this one is near Kyodo station. I was a lunch-time regular at a Fuji Soba near Kanda station when I worked near there. They are open 24 hours a day. Their website, which is in Japanese but understandable with Google Translate, has the menu with pictures and prices, as well as a list of shops with their addresses and can be found here: http://fujisoba.co.jp/
