岛根县处于日本本州的最西部， 沿着日本海，是个小并窄的县市。由于岛根县是个山区，只有沿岸地区适合居住，所以县人口仅有七十一万人， 是日本第二小的县市。岛根县是个宁静优美的地方， 县首都松江市人口仅有二十万人， 是全日本最小城市。岛根县人口老化趋势特别明显， 大部分的人口是老人， 也是全国老人最多的地方。因此人瑞也是全国最多的地方。
