The description
7-11 convenience stores' selection of deli side dishes includes this potato salad with basil and a sprig of broccoli. The side dish is 258 yen before tax.
The good
In 7-11's Cup Deli line of side dishes you'll find this small serving of nama hamu to bajiru no potato sarada. It's labeled pork ham, basil, potato and mayonnaise. It's got the smooth and creamy texture typical of Japanese potato salad. This is really lovely and it was hard to keep some of it back for a bento box filling. The "pork ham" is probably best described as prosciutto. There is a generous amount of basil sauce in the potato salad itself and drizzled over the top. The small portion is 258 yen before tax.
The not so good
This is an irresistable small side dish. It's got a fresh green colour, which is novel for a potato salad, a slice of prosciutto, and a sprig of broccoli. But could I make something similar at home of the same quantity for the same price? Maybe, but when I consider the costs of the individual ingredients - basil sauce, a head of broccoli, and a few slices of good-quality ham are going to run about 700 yen or so. So 7-11 it is. Also of note that fewer and fewer of 7-11's sides come in plastic containers with lids.
