6 killed in apartment fire in eastern Japan, man surrenders to police

MITO, Japan - Six people died after a fire engulfed an apartment in eastern Japan early Friday morning, with a man who claimed to have deliberately started the blaze handing himself in to police.

The fire was extinguished around 5:50 a.m. about an hour after it started at the three-story building in Hitachi, Ibaraki Prefecture. While the bodies of four men and a woman were found at the site, another woman was confirmed dead after being taken to a hospital, firefighters said.

Six people -- a woman and five children -- have not been contacted since the fire. They were living in the room where the fire started, the police said.

The man in his 30s handed himself in at a police station in Hitachi, saying, "I set fire to my house," according to the police.
