Japan Airlines Co. and All Nippon Airways Co. flew charters from Tokyo's Haneda airport on Monday for an aerial view of the first sunrise of 2018 and Mount Fuji.

A JAL Boeing 767 and ANA Boeing 787 departed around 6 a.m. on New Year's Day to watch the sun rise at approximately 6:50 a.m. as passengers took photo after photo of the spectacular view over the sky above Nagano and Yamanashi Prefectures. The trip lasted slightly longer than two hours.

A pair of the most expensive window seats on the JAL flight sold for 140,000 yen and 100,000 yen on ANA. JAL and ANA, respectively, also offered similar flights out of Narita and Chubu airports, respectively.

The pilot of the ANA flight and eight cabin attendants aboard the JAL charter originating from Haneda were all born in the Year of the Dog -- the Chinese zodiac sign of 2018.

Yoshimi Sugihara, a 60-year-old housewife from Saitama, was luckily bumped up from the waiting list on the ANA tour.

"I just managed to get in thanks to a cancellation," she said. "It was so moving to see the horizon and Mt. Fuji lit bright red by the sun."
