A new-to-me type of portable toilet - the Toilet Car!

A new-to-me type of portable toilet - the Toilet Car! photo

I love the way that after 25 years in Japan, I can still find things that surprise me in everyday life. A point in case - today I spotted this portable "toilet car" parked, while I was driving through a rural corner of Saitama! Thankfully, my son was with me and in the passenger seat of the car, so he was able to get a photo of it for me.

Unlike the portable toilets you find at festivals or construction sites, or the mobile toilet trucks dispatched to areas affected by a natural disaster, this toilet is in a small van! Moreover, it is a self‑propelled, fully flushing mobile restroom, complete with its own water and wastewater tanks. Thanks to the branding on the toilet car (/van) I was able to do a bit of research online. It revealed that Kanamoto are a major construction‑equipment rental company.

Their "toilet car" was designed for places where workers spend long hours but plumbing simply doesn’t exist. Such as riverbank reinforcement zones, mountain tunnels, solar‑farm installations, and other remote civil‑engineering projects. Because these sites are often far from public facilities, companies can rent their high‑spec mobile toilets to maintain hygiene standards and support crews working in difficult conditions.

How cool is that!? It looks so much better than a Portaloo. I hope it is more comfortable and less smelly than them too! Have you ever seen a toilet car before? Have you ever been inside one? Please do share what they are like inside, I am so curious now!
