Acanthus, a birthday flower of June 10th

Acanthus is a striking early‑summer flower in Japan, known for its bold, architectural presence and deep historical roots. Acanthus typically blooms from June to August in Japan. The photo in this post was taken on June 23rd.

Acanthus rises on tall spikes lined with sculptural bracts, giving gardens a dramatic, almost classical silhouette. Its large, deeply cut leaves are just as iconic. So iconic, in fact, that they inspired the ornate carvings of Corinthian columns in ancient Greek architecture, a connection that still shapes how the flower is understood today.

In the Japanese language of flowers, known as the hanakotoba, Acanthus carries the meanings of "art" and "artifice", meanings it shares with the language of flowers in the West too. Acanthus is the birthday flower of June 10th, but also of July 11th annually too.
