7 Practical Rainy Season Fashion Tips

Summer is a very fun season for fashionistas, because they could easily play around with various styles. However, when rain starts to pour during Japan's rainy season, it can be a bit troubling to stay dry and strut in your high-heels.

So, here are my 7 Practical Rainy Season Fashion Tips:

1. Put on your boots

Not only does it look edgy but wearing boots can protect your feet from getting wet. I personally like Doc Marten boots because of their durability. Doc Martens can be a bit pricey in Japan but they last longer and can endure rough rainy days.

If you want a pair but you’re on a budget, just go to second-hand shops like Don Don Don Down Wednesday—it’s where I actually bought these boots!

2. Tie your hair up!

My hair gets really frizzy during Japan's rainy days and becomes unmanageable when windy, so I usually just put it on a bun or if I have time, I do fancy hairstyles. Watch YouTube tutorials or check out beauty blogs for ideas.

I also use Body Shop’s Polynesian Monoi Radiance Oil to keep my hair shiny and smooth and Mandom Corp’s G Long-Keep Gel to keep my baby-hairs in place.

3. Pattern clothes are a must!

It’s inevitable that you will get wet when you go out during rainy days. You can just wipe the rain off from your skin but it’ll take a while to dry your garments. Hence, I recommend wearing clothes with patterns to hide the watermarks.

In addition, choose quick-dry fabrics.

4. Wear shorts

If you want to wear less fabric as much as you can to avoid being damp for a long period of time, then go for shorts. Just wipe your legs when you get splattered by water (or mud) and you’re good to go.

I also wear shorts underneath my skirt or dress to avoid having an ‘embarrassing moment’ when it becomes unexpectedly windy.

5. Waterproof make-up

One of my fears when the weather is bad is that I’ll end up looking like the ‘Joker,’ because my make-up becomes runny. Hence, I have switched to using waterproof mascara and eyeliner. I don’t put too much foundation, so I have no problems with that.

I recommend using Benefit’s Roller Lash. It’s the best mascara I’ve ever had. It’s waterproof, but easy to remove. However, it’s not available in Japan yet. I usually buy mine in France.  Japan’s Heroine Make’s mascara, on the other hand, is a great substitute. It’s just a bit challenging to remove though, but it’s my second fave. This brand also has fantastic waterproof eyeliners, which I have been using for a couple of years now.

6. Side-bag for comfort

Wearing a side-bag is very convenient, especially when you are busy holding an umbrella and evading water droplets as much as you can.

You can wear a backpack, but it usually gets wet at the back, especially when your umbrella isn’t wide enough.

7. Keeping it warm with a cardigan

I like wearing cardigans during Japan's rainy season because I feel chilly easily and I can just as easily remove it when I feel warm and tuck it in my ‘side-bag.’
